Towing operators

Towing Industry Reporting

Effective March 30, 2009, federal rules require certain businesses to report information about salvage vehicles that they handle to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS). Affected by the reporting requirements is any entity that owns, controls, handles, acquires or sells five or more junk or salvage vehicles per year (including vehicles declared a total loss).

The Department of Justice recently provided a reporting clarification for towing companies. Read ADD’s article on tow reporting or view a Spanish language version of the article. Also available is a [salvage vehicle worksheet](/pdfs/Salvage_Automobile_Determination_ Worksheet_1.pdf) to help determine if a vehicle is required to be reported.

Auto Data Direct, Inc. (ADD) contracts with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) to provide affected towing operators and vehicle storage facilities with the ability to upload the vehicle information into NMVTIS.

Reporting Requirements

Any entity that deals in more than five junk and salvage vehicles per year must provide specific vehicle information to the national database on at least a monthly basis. Required information includes:

  • VIN
  • Date the automobile was obtained
  • Name of the individual or entity from whom the automobile was obtained
  • A statement of whether the automobile was crushed or disposed of, or offered for sale or other purposes
  • Whether the vehicle is intended for export out of the United States

ADD Helps You Meet the Requirement At a Low Cost

ADD’s NMVTIS upload tools are designed to help you fulfill the reporting requirement quickly and easily. Two account types are available to suit any size business or upload volume. Full Service accounts include individual vehicle entry, batch vehicle entry using a spreadsheet and business-to-business processing which can be arranged with the customer’s IT staff, all for a low per-report fee. Basic Service accounts include no-cost individual entry and emailed confirmation receipts.

For Full Service accounts, ADD will set up a pre-paid account that will be debited with each upload. There is a one-time account activation fee of $250 and ADD asks that you provide an initial working balance of $50, which means users can get started for as little as $300. Volume discounts are available. The price per upload is only $0.38 per record.

If you report salvage data through ADD’s Full Service account and you also need to make vehicle inquiries, ADD offers a discounted rate of $2.87 per NMVTIS inquiry.

For towing companies and other qualified businesses, ADD real-time owner and lienholder inquiries in 30 states, with more coming soon! Real- time inquiry availability varies by state and industry. Visit the DMV123 page for more information.

*Please note: an “upload” is defined as a single vehicle record on a specific day from a specific reporting entity.
