Starting July 1st the state of Alabama is updating their towing regulations, requiring tow companies that handle abandoned vehicles to report the vehicle as “unclaimed” to the Department of Revenue (DOR). This report must be submitted within 5 calendar days after the vehicle has been determined as unclaimed, or storage fees may not be assessed.

For those in the salvage industry, it seems that information on enforcement of NMVTIS requirements is slow in coming and low-key when it is released. As most of you know, I have been at conferences and tradeshows all around the country since the NMVTIS program started in March of 2009. I have tried to help keep the affected industry members informed of activities and requirements pertinent to their business, and tried to explain why the information is needed and how it is being used. I can’t tell you how many times I get asked, “When will DOJ start enforcing the NMVTIS rule?” Up to this point, I’ve been able to share that I knew the department was looking into compliance and had identified some violators. Now, however, I can share some specific information on DOJ enforcement activities and how you can keep current with the status of its ongoing efforts.

It’s been a long time coming but both modernized ETR and new EFS are now available to ADDTag customers! Every day more and more ADDTag customers are migrating over to the new user-friendly ETR interface, with many are choosing to also become a new EFS participant. The old ETR system will be shut off by the DMV this coming September, meaning that by August 30, 2016 all ETR users will need to be actively participating in the new system. If you have not yet been registered in the new ETR system please take the opportunity to click on the ADDTAG BETA tab to register and take a look around. It is also important to note that user background checks will be required within the DMV’s new system, so make sure to complete background checks and input those into the ADD system.

This year’s NIADA convention was huge for the ADD dealer family! Lisette Mariner, director of the Florida Independent Automobile Dealers Association (FIADA) was named the National State Executive of the Year! Lisette has an extensive association management background and since becoming Executive Director of the FIADA in June 2011, adding her level of association management expertise, Lisette has helped to strengthen an already great association.

Even though the floodwaters left behind after the recent deluge in Texas have receded, the damage the water caused remains and that includes a lot of vehicles. After a major flood, many of the once-soaked vehicles make their way into the used car and salvage market, often with no indication of their water-logged past. Flood vehicles can be and often are moved out of states where the flood happened, and resold in another state far from where the damage occurred. No one wants to deal with the corroded electronics, contaminated lubricants and faulty computer systems that come with water-damaged vehicles, issues that may not appear until months after a vehicle has been cleaned up and sold.

In Connecticut, the DMV has taken a different approach to processing the ABA certificates and now requires proof of notice to out of state vehicle owners and lienholders.
