Customer Service FAQs: California Dealer NMVTIS Reports

for Auto Dealers on Monday, October 29, 2012 by Brittany Barrett

ADD’s wonderful customer service representatives answer your California Dealer NMVTIS Vehicle History Report questions!

Do I have to pull NMVTIS reports on all of my vehicles?

After July 1, 2012, all California dealers must pull a NMVTIS report for each used car sold at retail. Dealers are not required to run a NMVTIS report for vehicles that are intended for wholesale.

Do I have to display a copy of the NMVTIS report in the vehicle window?

No, California dealers are not required to display a copy of the NMVTIS record, but it must be made readily available to your customer.

If you would like to display the vehicle history report, ADD offers its StiQR (pronounced “sticker”) sales tool. The ADD StiQR is an innovative lead-generation tool that uses QR code technology to deliver NMVTIS reports to the consumer via a window sticker. ADD StiQRs integrate NMVTIS histories, dealer marketing, vehicle information, photos, video, web and social media into a mobile-friendly sales tool.

Car buyers can scan the QR code with any smartphone, and will be linked to a vehicle-specific landing page displaying the dealer information and the vehicle’s NMVTIS history. Email, internet and social network sharing tools allow the consumer to access and share all the information necessary to make a purchase decision, while providing the dealer with cutting-edge inventory feedback and lead generation.

What do I do if a NMVTIS report comes back with junk or salvage

information?

If the NMVTIS report indicates that the vehicle:

  • is or has been a junk or salvage automobile
  • has been reported as junk or a salvage by an auto auction, junk or salvage yard or an insurance carrier
  • has a certificate of title containing a brand of any kind

you must post a red warning label on the vehicle and provide the retail purchaser with a copy of the report upon request, prior to sale.

Where can I obtain the red warning labels for vehicles that have a junk,

salvage, total loss or brand history?

You can order the required NMVTIS warning labels through Auto Data Direct. Look for the green Order California AB1215 Warning Label below the VIN entry when you pull a report.

For all vehicles with a junk or salvage history, the warning labels must be displayed on the window of the vehicle in close proximity to the FTC Buyer’s Guide.

I have a lot of used vehicles for sale, is there an easy way for me to

pull all my NMVTIS reports at once?

In addition to NMVTIS pay-per-pull, which allows California dealers to pull reports on a one-by-one basis via ADD’s website, users have the option to submit VINs in batches. ADD’s batch system allows dealers to pull multiple records all at once - a great option for initial inventory loads or high- volume users! Email us for more info!
